The Bodies of the York Rite
The York Rite journey begins in the Blue Lodge, where a man receives the Degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. From that foundation, he may continue through Royal Arch Chapter, Cryptic Council, and Knights Templar Commandery.
The Foundation and the Continuation
Beginning in the Blue Lodge
In American York Rite Masonry, the three principal York Rite bodies are Royal Arch Chapter, Cryptic Council, and Knights Templar Commandery. Membership in each of these bodies begins with the Blue Lodge, because a man must first become a Master Mason in a recognized Masonic Lodge.
For that reason, the Blue Lodge may be understood as the first and foundational body in the York Rite journey. It provides the moral, symbolic, and fraternal foundation upon which all later York Rite Degrees and Orders are built.
The bodies that follow do not replace the Blue Lodge or grant a higher Masonic rank. Instead, they continue its story, broaden its lessons, and provide additional opportunities for fellowship, education, leadership, charity, faith, and service.
Blue Lodge is the foundation. Chapter continues the story. Council reveals hidden connections. Commandery culminates the journey in the Christian Orders of knighthood.
The York Rite Path
Four Bodies, Each with a Distinct Purpose
The journey moves in order from the foundational Degrees of the Lodge to the Capitular, Cryptic, and Chivalric teachings of the York Rite.
Blue Lodge
The Blue Lodge is where every York Rite Mason begins. Through the Degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason, a man is introduced to the essential teachings, obligations, symbols, and fellowship of Freemasonry.
These Degrees establish the foundation for everything that follows. A Mason must be raised to the Degree of Master Mason and remain in good standing before he may petition a Royal Arch Chapter and continue through the York Rite.

Royal Arch Chapter
Royal Arch Masonry is the first body entered after the Blue Lodge. Its Degrees continue the Masonic narrative and bring important themes of the Master Mason Degree into a fuller and more satisfying perspective.
Chapter teaches lessons of diligent labor, leadership, completion, recovery, faith, and the search for that which was lost. A member of a Royal Arch Chapter is known as a Companion.

Cryptic Council
Cryptic Masonry returns to earlier events surrounding King Solomon’s Temple. Its Degrees reveal circumstances and hidden connections that help explain the lessons presented in the Blue Lodge and Royal Arch Chapter.
Council emphasizes fidelity, preservation, duty, secrecy, sacrifice, and the enduring value of truth. Members of a Cryptic Council are also known as Companions.

Knights Templar Commandery
Commandery presents the Christian Orders of the York Rite. These Orders draw upon the traditions and ideals of Christian knighthood to teach faith, courage, charity, humility, sacrifice, and service.
The final Orders are expressly Christian and require a profession of Christian faith. Upon completing the Orders, a member is received as a Knight Templar and addressed as Sir Knight.

How the Bodies Relate
Separate Organizations, Connected Lessons
Each York Rite body is governed independently and has its own officers, meetings, ceremonies, traditions, and charitable work. Even so, their lessons form a connected progression for the Mason who chooses to complete the full journey.
The Lodge Establishes the Foundation
The first three Degrees provide the shared foundation of every York Rite Mason.
Chapter Continues the Master Mason Story
The Royal Arch expands and completes central themes introduced in the Lodge.
Council Reveals Earlier Events
The Cryptic Degrees explain hidden circumstances that connect the larger narrative.
Commandery Presents the Christian Orders
The Chivalric Orders culminate the journey through lessons of Christian faith and service.
An Important Distinction
Further Education, Not Higher Masonry
The York Rite bodies should not be viewed as levels that place one Mason above another. The Degree of Master Mason remains the highest Degree in the Blue Lodge and the common foundation of the fraternity.
Chapter, Council, and Commandery offer additional lessons and experiences for those who wish to continue their education. Their purpose is not to confer superiority, but to encourage deeper study, stronger fellowship, greater service, and continued personal growth.
The York Rite journey begins in the Lodge and continues through distinct bodies united by a common purpose: helping good men become better.
